had known。 Thither Beren could not e。 For it was not permitted to the Valar to withhold Death from him察which is
the gift of Il┣vatar to Men。 But the other choice was this此that she might return to Middle´earth察and take with her Beren察
there to dwell again察but without certitude of life or joy。 Then she would bee mortal察land subject to a second death察
even as he察and ere long she would leave the world for ever察and her beauty bee only a memory in song。
This doom she chose察forsaking the Blessed Realm察and putting aside all claim to kinship with those that dwell
there察that thus whatever grief might lie in wait察the fates of Beren and L┣thien might be joined察and their paths lead
together beyond the confines of the world。 So it was that alone of the Eldali拭she has died indeed察and left the world long
ago。 Yet in her choice the Two Kindreds have been joined察and she is the forerunner of many in whom the Eldar see yet察
thought all the world is changed察the likeness of L┣thien the beloved察whom they have lost。
Chapter 20
Of the Fifth Battle此Nirnaeth
Arnoediad
It is said that Beren and L┣thien returned to the northern lands of Middle´earth察and dwelt together for a time as living
man and woman察and they took up again their mortal form in Doriath。 Those that saw them were both glad and fearful察
and L┣thien went to Menegroth and healed the winter of Thingol with the touch of her hand。 But Melian looked in her
eyes and read the doom that was written there察and turned away察for she knew that a parting beyond the end of the world
had e between them察and no grief of loss has been heavier than the grief of Melian the Maia in that hour。 Then Beren
and L┣thien went forth alone察fearing neither thirst nor hunger察and they passed beyond the River Gelion into Ossiriand察
and dwelt there in Tol Galen the green isle察in the midst of Adurant察until all tidings of them ceased。 The Eldar
afterwards called that country Dor Firn´i´Guinar察the Land of the Dead that Live察and there was born Dior Aranel the
beautiful察who was after known as Dior Eluch┴l察which is Thingol's Heir。 No mortal man spoke ever again with Beren
son of Barahir察and none saw Beren or L┣thien leave the world察or marked where at last their bodies lay。
In those days Maedhros son of Fanor lifted up his heart察perceiving that Morgoth was not unassailable察for the
deeds of Beren and L┣thien were sung in many songs throughout Beleriand。 Yet Morgoth would destroy them all察one by
one察if they could not again unite察and make new league and mon council察and he began those counsels for the
raising of the fortunes of the Eldar that are called the Union of Maedhros。
Yet the oath of Fanor and the evil deeds that it had wrought did injury to the design of Maedhros察and he had
less aid than should have been。 Orodreth would not march forth at the word of any son of Fanor察because of the deeds
of Celegorm and Curufin察and the Elves of Nargothrond trusted still to defend their hidden stronghold by secrecy and
stealth。 Thence came only a small pany察following Gwindor son of Guilin察a very valiant prince察and against the will
of Orodreth he went to the northern war察because he grieved for the loss of Gelmir his brother in the Dagor Bragollach。
They took the badge of the house of Fingolfin察and marched beneath the banners of Fingon察and they came never back察
save one。
From Doriath came little help。 For Maedhros and his brothers察being constrained by their oath察had before sent to
Thingol and reminded him with haughty words of their claim察summoning him to yield the Silmaril察or bee their
enemy。 Melian counselled him to surrender it察but the words of the sons of Fanor were proud and threatening察and
Thingol was filled with anger察thinking of the anguish of L┣thien and the blood of Beren whereby the jewel had been
won察despite the malice of Celegorm and Curufin。 And every day that he looked upon the Silmaril the more he desired to
keep it for ever察for such was its power。 Therefore he sent back the messengers with scornful words。 Maedhros made no
answer察for he had now begun to devise the league and union of the Elves察but Celegorm and Curufin vowed openly to
slay Thingol and destroy his people察if they came victorious from war察and the jewel were not surrendered of free will。
Then Thingol fortified the marches of his realm察and went not to war察nor any out of Doriath save Mablung and Beleg察
who were unwilling to have no part in these great deeds。 To them Thingol gave leave to go察so long as they served not
the sons of Fanor察and they joined themselves to the host of Fingon。
But Maedhros had the help of the Naugrim察both in armed force and in great store of weapons察and the smithies
of Nogrod and Belegost were busy in those days。 And he gathered together again all his brothers and all the people who
would follow them察and the Men of B┏r and Ulfang were marshalled and trained for war察and they summoned yet more
of their kinsfolk out of the East。 Moreover in the west Fingon察ever the friend of Maedhros察took counsel with Himring察
and in Hithlum the Noldor and the Men of the house of Hador prepared for war。 In the forest of Brethil Halmir察lord of
the People of Haleth察gathered his men察and they whetted their axes察but Halmir died ere the war came察and Haldir his
son ruled that people。 And to Gondolin also the tidings came察to Turgon察the hidden king。
But Maedhros made trial of his strength too soon察ere his plans were full´wrought察and though the Orcs were
driven out of all the northward regions of Beleriand察and even Dorthonion was freed for a while察Morgoth was warned of
the uprising of the Eldar and the Elf´friends察and took counsel against them。 Many spies and workers of treason he sent
forth among them察as he was the better able now to do察for the faithless Men of his secret allegiance were yet deep in the
secrets of the sons of Fanor。
At length Maedhros察having gathered all the strength that he could of Elves and Men and Dwarves察resolved to
assault Angband from east and west察and he purposed to march with banners displayed in open force over Anfauglith。
But when he had drawn forth察as he hoped察the armies of Morgoth in answer察then Fingon should issue forth from the
passes of Hithlum察and thus they thought to take the might of Morgoth as between anvil and hammer察and break it to
pieces。 And the signal for this was to be the firing of a great beacon in Dorthonion。
On the appointed day察on the morning of Midsummer察the trumpets of the Eldar greeted the rising of the sun察and
in the east was raised the standard of the sons of Fanor察and in the west the standard of Fingon察High King of the
Noldor。 Then Fingon looked out from the walls of Eithel Sirion察and his host was arrayed in the valleys and the woods
upon the east of Ered Wethrin察well hid from the eyes of the Enemy察but he knew that it was very great。 For there all the
Noldor of Hithlum were assembled察together with Elves of the Falas and Gwindor's pany from Nargothrond察and he
had great strength of Men此upon the right were the host of Do
